A New Organization for a Beloved Venture
The Maritime Music & Tradition Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 2021 for the purpose of preserving and encouraging maritime and traditional music through education, research, performance and community.
We are performers, scholars, and enthusiasts of the music of the sea, actively engaged in furthering the purposes of our organization. We are sailors, landlubbers, teachers, and students of the history and lore of the sea, rivers, and inland waters from the Age of Sail until the present.
We presented the Connecticut Sea Music Festival annually in the historic Connecticut town of Essex. In addition to evening concerts and workshops by performers of maritime music, there is a Symposium on the Music of the Sea, with presentations by scholars and practitioners. We work with local organizations, including The Griswold Inn, home for six decades of the Monday Night Chantey Sings.
